How Tiers Work

VIP tiers create a hierarchy of loyalty levels. Customers progress automatically through tiers based on cumulative spend or points, unlocking new benefits at each level.

Setting Up Tiers

1

Define your tiers

Go to Settings > VIP Tiers and create your tier structure. Common setups include 3-4 levels.
2

Set thresholds

Configure the required points to reach each tier. Customers who meet the threshold are automatically upgraded.
3

Assign benefits

Define what each tier unlocks: exclusive rewards, higher earning multipliers, early access, or free shipping.
4

Design tier-specific cards

Create different wallet pass designs per tier so the visual experience reflects customer status.

Example Tier Structure

Tier Required Points Benefits
Bronze 0 Base earning rate, 2 rewards
Silver 500 1.5x earning rate, 5 rewards, free shipping reward
Gold 2,000 2x earning rate, unlimited rewards, exclusive products
Platinum 5,000 3x earning rate, priority support, VIP events

Current vs Carry Points

JeriCommerce distinguishes between two types of points:

The points balance visible to the customer. These are the spendable points used to redeem rewards.

When a customer redeems a reward, current points decrease. This does not affect their tier status.

Internal tracking points used for tier calculation within a recalculation cycle. Carry points determine whether a customer maintains, upgrades, or downgrades their tier.

Carry points are not visible to the customer and reset at each recalculation cycle.

This separation means a customer can redeem all their points for rewards without losing their Gold status. Tier position is calculated independently from the spendable balance.

Recalculation Cycles

Tiers are recalculated periodically to prevent permanent tier status. At each cycle:

  1. The system evaluates carry points accumulated during the cycle
  2. Customers who meet the threshold maintain or upgrade their tier
  3. Customers below threshold are downgraded
  4. Carry points reset to zero for the new cycle

Configure recalculation cycles carefully. Too short (monthly) may frustrate customers; too long (yearly) may reduce urgency. Quarterly cycles work well for most retail brands.

Tier Change Notifications

When a customer's tier changes, JeriCommerce automatically:

  • Sends a push notification to their wallet pass
  • Updates the wallet pass design to reflect the new tier
  • Fires a Shopify Flow trigger and Klaviyo event for downstream automation

Create a Klaviyo Flow triggered by "Tier Downgrade" to send a re-engagement campaign with an incentive to regain their previous status.
